What Utah House Speaker Mike Schultz had to say about potential veto overrides in 2025

Utah’s House Speaker Mike Schultz is not ruling out the possibility of overriding any of the six vetoes from the 2025 legislative session. According to Utah’s Constitution, lawmakers have until May 6 to reconvene for an override session, if two-thirds of the members in both chambers agree. The House and Senate are currently polling their members on the issue. Schultz expressed respect for the governor’s vetoes, although he disagreed with some. He supported four of the six bills Cox vetoed.

The Governor has indicated that a special session may be needed to fix some bills from the 2025 session, separate from the veto override session. Cox wants to fix bills related to election transparency and county government amendments, as well as reappropriate funds that were supposed to go to Sundance but will now go to Boulder, Colorado.

Schultz mentioned that discussions will continue on these bills and that compromises may be reached in the future. The Governor is set to decide the agenda for the special session, which may include addressing the concerns raised about the vetoed bills. Negotiations between Cox and legislative leaders may lead to amended versions of the bills, potentially avoiding the need for a veto override session.
