Dozens of international students at the University of Utah are facing uncertainty after their visas were suddenly revoked by the Trump administration. Lean Agravante, a graduate student from the Philippines, expressed his concerns about potentially having to leave the country and start over. A University of Utah spokesperson confirmed that half of the affected students are from China, with others coming from countries like India and the Middle East. The reasons given for the visa revocations include “failure to maintain nonimmigrant status and/or criminal record check.”
The university officials noted that the student records kept by the Department of Homeland Security were terminated without notice, and none of the students were flagged for protesting. Agravante and another student, Yeojin Byun from South Korea, are worried about their futures and are unsure who they can rely on for help. Both students are close to graduating and fear losing everything they have worked for. The uncertainty surrounding their visa status has left them unsure about what the future holds.
