Man from Connecticut pleads guilty to manslaughter in fatal 2023 crash that claimed life of police officer

A 20-year-old Connecticut man, Richard Barrington, pleaded guilty to charges including manslaughter, first-degree assault, and interfering with a police officer for causing a car crash that killed Hartford police officer Robert “Bobby” Garten and seriously wounded his partner, Officer Brian Kearney. Barrington was 18 at the time of the crash in 2023, which occurred when he fled a traffic stop, ran red lights, and collided with the police cruiser responding to another emergency call. Garten, an eight-year police veteran, died from his injuries, while Kearney was hospitalized but later released. Barrington was initially charged with motor vehicle offenses but more serious charges were added later, including driving under the influence. His lawyer, Cameron Atkinson, stated that they will reserve comments for the sentencing hearing scheduled for June 20. The death of Officer Garten led to a memorial service attended by police officers from various departments in the region, highlighting the impact of the tragedy on the community.
