Former U.S. Rep. Mia Love, the first Black Republican woman elected to Congress, will be honored in Salt Lake City Monday after passing away from brain cancer at age 49. Love, a daughter of Haitian immigrants, served Utah in Congress from 2015 to 2019 and was known for her groundbreaking political achievements.
State lawmakers and the public paid their respects at Love’s flag-covered coffin at the Utah Capitol on Sunday. Her memorial service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Institute of Religion on the University of Utah campus, followed by an honor guard presentation.
Love was first elected to political office in 2003 and gained national attention after narrowly losing a bid for Congress in 2012. She ultimately won in 2014, making history as the first Black woman to represent Utah in Congress. Love’s career in politics was marked by her willingness to challenge the norms of her party, including her criticisms of President Donald Trump. Despite facing obstacles, she remained dedicated to serving her community and breaking down barriers for underrepresented groups in politics.
