Fort Walton Beach animal shelter benefits from radio host’s $2,400 slumber party fundraiser

Fort Walton Beach radio personality Kevin McKay recently spent the night at the Save Our Cats and Kittens animal shelter to raise funds for the organization. The shelter slumber party raised nearly $2,400 for SOCKS, helping to support the facility’s monthly budget of $35,000. More than 50 shelters nationwide participated in similar efforts over the weekend to raise money for their facilities.

Lorriane Whetstone, development manager at SOCKS, emphasized the importance of fundraisers like McKay’s sleepover, especially during times of economic uncertainty. With donations declining by nearly 60% from the previous year, events like these are crucial for the shelter to continue providing long-term care for cats in the area.

Whetstone praised McKay for shedding light on the shelter and encouraging more locals to volunteer their time or donate. The success of the slumber party also led to increased interest in upcoming events, such as the Kittucky Derby on April 26. This family-friendly event will feature games, hat contests, and kitten racing, with tickets available for $25 per person.

Overall, McKay’s fundraising efforts not only helped raise essential funds for SOCKS but also brought attention to the shelter and encouraged community involvement. As local nonprofits continue to face challenges, events like these play a vital role in ensuring the well-being of animals in need.
