George Santos Faces Potential 7-Year Prison Sentence in Fraud Case, Prosecutors Pursue Justiciary Measures

Prosecutors are seeking more than seven years in prison for former U.S. Rep. George Santos after he pleaded guilty to federal fraud and identity theft charges. They argue that Santos’ crimes have made a mockery of the country’s election system. Santos’ lawyers are pushing for a two-year prison term, arguing that he has already taken responsibility for his actions and has no criminal record. Santos’ downfall began when it was revealed that he had fabricated much of his life story during his brief time in office, leading to questions about his campaign funding. He has admitted to duping voters, deceiving donors, and stealing identities to make donations to his campaign. Santos was given a three-month reprieve to come up with over half a million dollars in court fines before his sentencing. Prosecutors claim that Santos has profited from his infamy through appearances on Cameo and a documentary since his expulsion from Congress. Two of Santos’ campaign staffers have also pleaded guilty to federal charges in connection to the campaign financing scheme. Santos’ former campaign fundraiser was sentenced to federal prison, while his former campaign treasurer is awaiting sentencing in May. The sentencing hearing for Santos is scheduled for April 25.
