6,000 Utahns gathered at the state Capitol for the ‘Hands Off’ protest against Trump administration policies. Attendees expressed concerns over Social Security, Health and Human Services cuts, and changes made by the Department of Government Efficiency. While some attendees defended the administration, many were worried about healthcare access and government layoffs.
The protest, organized by groups like Indivisible and 50501, was part of over 1,200 protests held across the country, including in other locations in Utah. Attendees came from across the state to voice their concerns and express dissatisfaction with recent Utah legislation.
Protesters at the event included knitters, quilters, state Senator Nate Blouin, and individuals worried about Social Security benefits. Concerns were raised over cuts made by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., lay-offs, and changes DOGE plans to make to Social Security benefits. Many attendees expressed frustration over the current political climate and its impact on families and individuals.
Despite minimal counter-protesters at the event, attendee Chris Thomas from Springville defended the administration, suggesting that Trump and Musk were helping save money and eliminate fraud, which could benefit Social Security in the long run. The protests were largely peaceful, with no arrests reported, and similar protests were held in other cities across the country on the same day.
