Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin tied Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 career goals in a game against the Chicago Blackhawks. Ovechkin, the first overall pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, has been a dominant offensive player throughout his career. In addition to tying Gretzky’s record, Ovechkin holds multiple scoring records, including most power-play goals, most overtime goals, and most goals scored for a single team. Ovechkin has won nine Maurice “Rocket” Richard trophies for being the season’s top goal scorer and is a three-time NHL MVP. He also led the Capitals to a Stanley Cup victory in 2018, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. Despite not making it past the first round of the playoffs since their championship win, the Capitals are currently at the top of the Eastern Conference and second in the NHL, with Ovechkin as the third-highest scorer this season. Ovechkin, aged 39, has been playing professionally since 2001 and is under contract with the Capitals until the 2025-26 season.
