Removing Fluoride from Drinking Water in Utah: What’s the Plan? – Deseret News

Water districts in Utah that have been adding fluoride to drinking water are now faced with the challenge of slowly phasing out this chemical following the signing of HB81 by Governor Spencer Cox. This law prohibits the addition of fluoride to public water systems after May 7. While some districts have invested millions in distribution systems for fluoride, others have found that most of the water containing the chemical ends up unused.

Removing fluoride from distribution systems is a complicated and at times costly process, as the chemical needs to be safely disposed of. Weber Basin Water Conservancy District, for example, spent over $6.3 million on their fluoride program. The chemical used, hydrofluorosilicic acid, is a hazardous waste product that must be carefully managed.

Considering the potential health risks associated with fluoride, such as reduced IQ in children, and the inefficiency of adding it to water that is not fully consumed, many water districts and local authorities in Utah have chosen to support the removal of fluoride from public drinking water systems. This decision aligns with concerns raised by the public and recent legal rulings regarding the use of fluoride.
