New Policy for Land Acknowledgments Adopted by Utah Board of Higher Education

The Utah Board of Higher Education has implemented new guidelines for colleges and universities regarding Indigenous land acknowledgment statements. The policy specifies that institutions must have agreements with or grants related to Utah Native American tribes, engage in education, research, or service for tribes, or have a land-grant mission to make such statements. Guidelines outline when and where land acknowledgments should be shared and the contents of an approved statement template. Land acknowledgments may be made at meetings with tribes, events honoring tribe members, research and cultural events, or discussions on land stewardship. Institutions under the Utah System of Higher Education are encouraged to establish partnerships with tribes to improve access to education and retention rates. Universities like the University of Utah, Utah State University, and Southern Utah University have adopted land acknowledgment statements, with the U maintaining its existing statement. The policy does not apply to student clubs unless sponsored by the institution, and faculty members are free to express personal views on land acknowledgments. Institutions with agreements with tribes must report annually on their commitments.
