Andee Bouwhuis and a group of athletic directors in Utah joined together to create the second annual Women’s Day in Sports event in collaboration with the Utah Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. The event, held on Feb. 19, aimed to empower female high school athletes from all over the state to become better leaders both on and off the field.
The event featured speakers such as sports journalist Amy Donaldson, who encouraged the athletes to believe in themselves and strive for their goals. The program also included breakout sessions on topics like health and nutrition, mental health, leadership, and strength and conditioning to address concerns that female athletes, athletic directors, and coaches may have.
The Women’s Day in Sports event was a step towards providing equitable opportunities for female athletes in Utah, with the Jordan School District playing a significant role in supporting the event. Bryan Veazie, the district’s director of athletics and activities, emphasized the importance of ensuring equal opportunities for both boys and girls in sports.
Participants like Faytme Reese Myles, a West Jordan basketball player and runner, appreciated the sense of community and support the event provided, showcasing the strength and unity of female athletes in the state. Bouwhuis and her team hope to expand the event in the future to involve even more women and girls in Utah, continuing their efforts to promote female athletics and empower young athletes.
