A self-driving car was seen testing in Marquette on Friday, as Alphabet’s self-driving unit Waymo continues to expand its testing locations. Waymo plans to test its self-driving system in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in 2025, although the company has stated that just because a location is used for testing, it does not necessarily mean a commercial robotaxi service will be implemented there. The testing in Marquette occurred during an ice storm warning, allowing Waymo to assess how its self-driving system performs in varying weather conditions and regional driving habits.
Waymo has plans to introduce its robotaxis in Washington and Miami next year, adding to its current markets in Phoenix, Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Austin, Texas through a partnership with ride-hailing leader Uber. Furthermore, Waymo and Uber are also collaborating to launch robotaxis in Atlanta later this year.
Gray Media’s station in Phoenix has closely followed Waymo’s operations in that area, including an incident where a man became stuck in a self-driving vehicle while on his way to the airport. Waymo’s testing and expansion efforts are part of the company’s ongoing mission to revolutionize the way people travel and commute through the use of autonomous vehicles.
