Utah Ranks Among Best States for Doctors in New Study
A new study by WalletHub has ranked Utah as the fifth best state in the country for doctors to live and work. The study assessed all 50 states and the District of Columbia across 19 key metrics, including physician salaries, malpractice insurance rates, and the quality of hospital systems. Utah placed 18th for average annual physician wages when adjusted for cost of living, and 14th for malpractice award payout amounts per capita.
Despite ranking 25th in projected physicians per capita by 2032, Utah performed well in areas such as the punitiveness of its medical board and annual malpractice insurance premiums. The study comes as Utah continues to develop its health care and life sciences innovation ecosystem, with key concentrations in Salt Lake and Cache counties.
Idaho also performed well in the study, ranking 11th overall and 8th in Opportunity and Competition Rank. Medical professionals and policymakers are cautious of national challenges affecting the field, with emphasis on following passion over pay in the medical profession.
