Immigration Authorities Detain Georgetown University Graduate Student

Georgetown University graduate student from India, Badar Khan Suri, was detained by federal immigration authorities while teaching on a student visa. The Department of Homeland Security revoked his visa and arrested him outside his home in Arlington, Virginia. Suri’s attorney claims he has done nothing wrong, and the university is not aware of any misconduct. The reason for Suri’s detention has not been disclosed by DHS or the State Department. Assistant DHS Secretary Tricia McLaughlin accused Suri of spreading Hamas propaganda and having connections to terrorists. Suri is currently awaiting an immigration hearing at the Alexandria Staging Facility in Louisiana.

Suri is a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown University and an interdisciplinary scholar focusing on conflict resolution. He has completed his Ph.D. in peace and conflict studies in New Delhi and has traveled extensively in conflict zones. Suri’s work involves studying the hindrances to cooperation among religiously diverse societies. The university has expressed support for Suri and emphasizes the importance of free inquiry and debate.

This incident comes at a time when the Trump administration is seeking to deport students like Mahmoud Khalil and Leqaa Kordia, who have taken part in protests against Israel. Suri’s lawyer has filed a petition in federal court to determine the legality of his detainment. Georgetown University is standing by Suri and expects a fair adjudication of his case.
