Publisher supports former Facebook employee’s book, rejecting Meta

Macmillan responded to an arbitration order that has no impact on them but criticized Meta for attempting to silence one of their authors using a non-disparagement clause. The publisher, founded in the UK, defended their decision to publish the book, “Careless People” by Sarah Wynn-Williams, despite Meta’s objections. The book contains allegations of misconduct at Meta, including claims of sexual harassment and incomplete statements to Congress about Facebook’s relationship with China. Meta has criticized the book as containing false accusations and out-of-date claims about the company, while several current and former employees have also spoken out against it.

Wynn-Williams’ lawyer has refuted Meta’s statements and defended the accuracy of the memoir, which recounts events leading to her departure from Meta in 2017. The allegations in the book have attracted attention in Washington, particularly regarding Facebook’s interactions with Chinese regulators. Senator Mark Warner has expressed concern over the allegations and has called for an explanation from Meta in response to the book.

The arbitration decision was an interim finding and not the final judgment on the merits. Macmillan remains committed to publishing important books, including controversial ones, and has a history of releasing contentious titles. Despite Meta’s objections, the publisher has stood by their decision to publish “Careless People” and defend the author’s right to share her story.
