Protest images protesting public land policy displayed on Corona Arch – Deseret News

A new advocacy group, inspired by similar protests in England, projected 100-foot-high by 40-foot-wide images onto Corona Arch in BLM land near Moab, Utah last week. The group, called Keep Public Lands in Public Hands, aims to bring awareness to the potential sale and extractive use of public lands amid concerns over the Trump administration’s policies and Utah lawmakers’ desires to transfer federal land to states.

The images projected on the arch included messages like “Keep Public Lands in Public Hands” and a graphic of a home for sale sign stating that “Your Public Lands” were “under contract.” The group released a YouTube video outlining their concerns about the potential sale and privatization of public lands, citing the threat of drilling and loss of protections.

Founder Zeppelin Zeerip expressed concerns over the trend of state ownership of federal lands, highlighting Utah’s failed Supreme Court lawsuit seeking control of federal lands. While Utah has sold off some federal land for public goods, efforts have been made to sell off more public lands through bills and amendments.

The group’s protest at Corona Arch was inspired by the U.K.-based political activist group Led By Donkeys, known for using large projections to make political statements. Keep Public Lands in Public Hands plans to continue similar installations to raise awareness about public land issues and respond to threats to public lands in the future.
