Protesters reveal massive Pride flag in defiance of Utah’s recent attempt to outlaw it

Lawmakers in Utah have recently approved a bill that would ban the display of Pride flags on government property, including public schools. The bill, titled “Flag Display Amendments,” easily passed through the state’s Republican-dominated House and Senate and now awaits the approval or veto of Republican Governor Spencer Cox.

Critics of the bill argue that it is a violation of free speech and specifically targets LGBTQ+ youth. The American Civil Liberties Union of Utah (ACLU-Utah) has raised concerns about the bill, stating that it restricts free expression and sends a message that certain individuals are not welcome or protected. The organization has called on Governor Cox to veto the bill.

Equality Utah has also condemned the bill as unconstitutional, claiming that it is an attempt by powerful state interests to take control away from local governments and school boards. The group has expressed frustration with the legislative process and has vowed to challenge the bill in court if necessary.

If Governor Cox signs the bill into law, it would empower the state government to levy fines of $500 per violation per day against entities that display non-approved flags on government property. This decision would be subject to judicial review.

This controversial bill comes on the heels of another recent law signed by Governor Cox that bans transgender students from living in dorms that align with their gender identity at public universities and colleges. These developments have sparked outrage and concern among LGBTQ+ advocates in Utah.
