Utah Governor Spencer Cox Decides Not to Veto Pride Flag Legislation

Governor Cox announced Friday that he will not veto a bill banning prominent displays of Pride flags in schools and government buildings, despite protests against the measure. The bill, HB 77, passed through the Legislature on the second-to-last day of the session, leading to a rally outside the Capitol with hundreds of attendees holding a large Pride flag and chanting against the bill.

Cox stated that he will carefully review all bills before making a decision, as he has 20 days after the legislative session ends to do so. He also mentioned asking supporters of Pride flags how they would feel about displaying MAGA flags in schools, to which they expressed opposition. The Utah ACLU has urged Cox to veto the bill, citing concerns over free speech.

While some on social media support the ban on displaying Pride flags in schools, others argue that individuals should be able to display flags as they choose at their homes. The debate continues as the bill awaits the governor’s final decision.
