The Utah Ski Team kicked off the 2025 NCAA Ski Championships at the Dartmouth Skiway with slalom races, where they are currently tied for third place with Vermont. Despite facing rainy conditions, the Utes managed to secure a pair of All-American second-team honors with Johs Braathen Herland finishing seventh and Simen Strand placing eighth. This marks Herland’s first All-American nod and the sixth for Strand.
Due to weather concerns, the original race schedule was adjusted, moving the giant slalom to Friday instead of Thursday. The Nordic competitions remain unaffected by the change. Head alpine coach JJ Johnson praised the team’s performance, highlighting the strength in giant slalom while commending their solid performance in slalom.
In the men’s race, Utah’s scoring was dominated by top-15 finishes, with Herland, Strand, and Sindre Myklebust placing seventh, eighth, and fifteenth, respectively. Both Herland and Strand showed impressive runs, with Strand making a significant climb in the rankings on his second run.
On the women’s side, Kaja Norbye led Utah with a 15th place finish, while Kaila Lafreniere placed 24th and Claire Timmermann finished 31st. Norbye had the top time for the first run, while Timmermann overcame a stumble to secure a second run.
The Nordic portion of the championships will begin on Thursday, with a 7.5K classic interval start.
