North Korea suspends foreign tourism shortly after allowing Western visitors to re-enter

North Korea has closed its borders once again, suspending foreign tourism after recently allowing its first Western visitors in five years. The country sealed its borders in early 2020 due to Covid-19, gradually opening up from mid-2023. A group of Russian tourists visited in February 2024, followed by visitors from Britain, Canada, France, and Germany in March. The Western group was limited to the city of Rason and not allowed to visit Pyongyang. It is unclear why North Korea has closed to foreign visitors again and for how long. Tour operators have announced that travel to North Korea is no longer possible and recommend refraining from booking until further notice. Refunds are available for canceled tours. The closure is described as an unprecedented situation, leaving the future of tourism to North Korea uncertain.
