Verifying the accuracy of President Trump’s address to Congress

President Donald Trump delivered his first speech to Congress of his second term, touting big spending cuts, migration crackdown, and economic vision. However, he made false claims on various issues. For example, he falsely stated that millions of people over 100 were collecting Social Security, when in fact the vast majority were not. He also incorrectly blamed Joe Biden for spiking egg prices, as inflation was the main cause. Trump claimed that car plants were opening up due to his policies, but no new plants had been announced. In terms of immigration, he falsely claimed that towns like Aurora, Colorado and Springfield, Ohio were destroyed by migrants, which contradicts police reports. Trump also wrongly pointed the blame at Canada for the fentanyl crisis, despite the majority of fentanyl coming from the southern border.

In the health sector, Trump inaccurately stated that more children were being diagnosed with autism due to vaccines, when research attributes it to increased awareness and changing definitions. Regarding international affairs, Trump exaggerated the amount the US spent on Ukraine compared to Europe and falsely claimed that Europe was buying more Russian oil than defending Ukraine. He also incorrectly claimed that more Americans believe the country is heading in the right direction for the first time in modern history. Overall, Trump’s speech contained numerous misleading and false statements on a range of topics.
