First-term Rep. Sylvester Turner, D-Texas, passed away at the age of 70 after suffering a medical emergency. House Minority Whip Katherine Clark informed Democratic lawmakers of his death during a closed-door meeting. Turner had just taken office in January after being elected to Congress and had previously served as mayor of Houston from 2016 to 2024. He had a long career as a state lawmaker before entering Congress.
According to a witness, Turner appeared to be experiencing a medical emergency in the underground tunnel connecting the Capitol with the Cannon Building on Tuesday afternoon. Capitol Police were notified and came to his aid. Turner was a close ally of longtime Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, who had passed away from pancreatic cancer the previous year. Following her death, Turner announced his intention to run for her seat in Congress.
Turner’s sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the Democratic Party and the community he served. His dedication to public service and his long history of serving the people of Texas have left a lasting impact on those who knew him. His family has been notified of his death, and his colleagues and constituents are mourning the loss of a dedicated public servant.
