Utah Votes to Keep Contract with ERIC Voter Roll System, Rejecting Bill – Deseret News

A Senate committee recently rejected a bill that would have ended Utah’s contract with the ERIC voter roll system. Lawmakers are debating the role of the lieutenant governor in overseeing elections, as Utah’s lieutenant governor serves as the chief election official, a unique setup in the country. Different bills have been introduced, including one that would allow the lieutenant governor to delegate election oversight responsibilities to the attorney general in cases of disputes.

One bill, originally introduced by House Majority Whip Karianne Lisonbee, aimed to clean up voter rolls and provide new requirements for the lieutenant governor’s office. Despite concessions made by Lisonbee, the bill was rejected in a committee vote. Other bills are addressing concerns of conflicts of interest in election oversight, especially in light of Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson’s potential candidacy in the 2028 gubernatorial election.

Another bill seeks to create a new elections director position separate from the lieutenant governor’s office. This position would handle election responsibilities for one election cycle and be appointed by the attorney general, auditor, and treasurer. Additionally, a temporary election oversight task force would be created to recommend changes to the current system of election oversight and administration.

The debate in Utah reflects larger discussions around election oversight in the country. While some states elect their chief election officials, others have appointed officials. Utah’s unique setup with the lieutenant governor holding this role has sparked discussions about potential conflicts of interest and the need for reform in the state’s election oversight system.
