Utah Senator proposes making rodeo a valid school absence

Utah state Senator Michael McKell (R-Spanish Fork) has introduced Senate Bill 279, also known as the “High School Rodeo Amendments,” which aims to allow students to use participation in a rodeo as a valid excuse to miss school. The bill specifies that competing in a rodeo sanctioned by an international, non-profit organization focused on developing sportsmanship, horsemanship, and character in youth would be considered a legitimate reason for absence.

The bill has already passed in the Senate and is now awaiting discussion in the House Education Committee. If approved, the law would go into effect on July 1st. Supporters argue that rodeo competition teaches important life skills and should be recognized as a legitimate extracurricular activity for students. However, critics raise concerns about the potential for abuse of the excuse provision and its impact on academic attendance. The fate of the bill remains to be seen as it continues to make its way through the legislative process.
