Upcoming Events: March 3-9

The NHL trade deadline is fast approaching, with Utah Hockey Club firmly in the playoff race. Wins in three out of four games have brought the team within two points of the final wild card spot in the Western Conference. GM Bill Armstrong has made it clear that Utah will not be in sell mode ahead of the deadline. The team heads into a two-game road trip through the Midwest, starting with a game against the Detroit Red Wings.

The Red Wings, like Utah, are battling for a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference and have missed the postseason for eight straight seasons. Detroit’s top scorers are forward Alex DeBrincat and Lukas Raymond, while goaltenders are allowing an average of 3.1 goals per game. Injured players for the Red Wings include Michael Rasmussen and Elmer Söderblom, with Andrew Copp out for the season.

On the other hand, the Chicago Blackhawks are struggling with one of the worst records in the NHL and are eyeing a high draft pick. Forward Ryan Donato leads the team in goals, with Connor Bedard leading in assists. The Blackhawks have been hit with injuries to Philipp Kurashev and Nick Foligno, while Jason Dickinson and Laurent Brossoit are on injured reserve. Utah leads the season series against the Blackhawks 2-0.

In terms of notable performances, Utah captain Clayton Keller has been on fire, tallying 16 goals and 49 points since November. Forward Dylan Guenther has returned from injury with a strong showing, scoring six goals and 10 points in the past nine games. Goaltender Karel Vejmelka has also been solid, stopping 107 of 115 shots in his last five starts. With only six NHL teams more than six points out of a playoff spot, the race is heating up as the trade deadline looms.

Armstrong emphasized the team’s focus on fighting for a playoff spot and developing players before considering rentals. Utah is currently eight points ahead of last season’s pace after 61 games.

Overall, Utah Hockey Club is in a strong position as they push towards the playoffs and looks to maintain their winning momentum on the road.
