Pentagon to deploy almost 3,000 more active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border

The Pentagon is sending nearly 3,000 additional active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border in response to President Donald Trump’s efforts to crack down on illegal immigration. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered elements of a Stryker brigade combat team and a general support aviation battalion for the mission, with troops from Fort Carson and Fort Stewart being deployed in the coming weeks. These forces will provide transportation, engineering support, and detection and monitoring, but will not be involved in interdiction or deportation operations. The goal is to reinforce and expand current border security operations to seal the border and protect the territorial integrity of the United States. This deployment is part of Trump’s broader effort to involve the military in shutting down the border and returning detained migrants to their home countries. U.S. troops have been deployed to the border since the 1990s to address migration, drug trafficking, and transnational crime. The new deployment of troops is intended to further strengthen security measures at the southern border in line with Trump’s campaign promises.
