Marie-France Lhermite, the ex-wife of former surgeon Joël Le Scouarnec, testified in court that she knew nothing of her husband’s history of child sexual abuse until his arrest in 2017. Le Scouarnec is accused of raping or sexually assaulting 299 victims over nearly 30 years, most of them being children under 15. Lhermite denied knowing about the abuse in their family, including the rapes of their nieces in the 1980s. Her testimony lasted over four hours and was followed by Le Scouarnec’s brother, who claimed she knew about the abuse in 1996. Le Scouarnec begged for forgiveness from his brother and admitted to committing crimes. Le Scouarnec’s son also testified in court, revealing that he was sexually abused by his paternal grandfather. Another son described their once happy family being shattered by their father’s actions. The trial is expected to last about four months, and if convicted, Le Scouarnec could face up to 20 years in prison. The case has also shed light on potential intergenerational abuse within the family, with multiple members coming forward with their own experiences of abuse.
