Lawmakers working to enhance the Utah Fits All program – Deseret News

The Utah Fits All Scholarship, in its inaugural year, aims to provide financial support for students in private schools or who are homeschooled. Proposed revisions to the scholarship program, outlined in HB455 sponsored by Rep. Candice Pierucci, R-Herriman, include adjusting scholarship amounts, residency and income eligibility regulations, and improving program administration standards. This year, 10,000 students received scholarships, with 17,000 on the waitlist.

Rep. Pierucci emphasizes the importance of empowering parents and students through school choice while supporting a strong public education system. The bill passed unanimously in the House and now moves to the Senate.

Changes to the program include tightening residency requirements, income verification processes, and limits on extracurricular spending. With priority given to lower-income applicants, the scholarship amount for homeschooling families would be adjusted to $4,000 for elementary and $6,000 for middle and high school students. Oversight responsibility would shift to the Department of Financial Information.

Another bill, HB192 sponsored by Rep. Jennifer Dailey-Provost, D-Salt Lake City, would clarify that scholarship funds cannot be used for sports, recreational activities, or expenses available through other public programs.
