Andee Bouwhuis and a group of athletic directors from across Utah have been working together for over a year to address the gap they saw in support for high school female athletes in the state. Recently, they hosted the second annual Women’s Day in Sports event at the Jordan School District building, attracting nearly 200 female athletes and their coaches from various schools. The goal of the event was to empower female athletes to become better leaders both on and off the field.
Keynote speaker Amy Donaldson, a Utah high school sports journalist, encouraged the attendees to not settle and to work consistently towards their goals. Other speakers covered topics such as health, nutrition, mental health, leadership, and strength and conditioning. The event aimed to address concerns and provide opportunities for growth in female athletics in Utah.
Jordan School District’s director of athletics and activities, Bryan Veazie, highlighted the importance of providing equitable opportunities for both boys and girls in sports, especially with the historical prioritization of male athletes. The district has been involved in the Women’s Day in Sports event for the past two years and is committed to supporting the initiative moving forward.
Participants like West Jordan basketball player Faytme Reese Myles appreciated the sense of community and support the event provided, showing them the larger network of female athletes in the state. Bouwhuis and her team hope to continue expanding the event in the future to allow more women and girls to benefit from the empowering experience.
