Employee with DOGE affiliation breaches IRS system and accesses sensitive taxpayer data

An IRS employee affiliated with the Department of Government Efficiency has accessed a sensitive taxpayer information system called the Integrated Data Retrieval System (IDRS). The employee, who started during the second Trump administration, has the appropriate security clearances and is carrying out the “DOGE mission” legally. White House spokesperson Harrison Fields stated that direct access to systems like IDRS is needed to identify and fix waste, fraud, and abuse in the government system. DOGE, led by Elon Musk, has been focusing on cutting wasteful spending in various government agencies, including the U.S. Department of the Treasury, FEMA, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and U.S. Agency for International Development. The group aims to increase transparency and accountability in government spending, and has targeted reducing the federal workforce. The IRS did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the employee’s access to sensitive information. This move marks an expansion of DOGE’s efforts to access and analyze sensitive government data to uncover and address financial inefficiencies and misconduct.
