The University of Utah swim program had a successful first day at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas First Chance Meet, with six first-place finishes and a top 10 time. Eleven Utes participated in hopes of qualifying for post-season meets. Assistant coach Brody Lewis praised the team’s performance and expects more success on the following day.
Highlights from the meet included Davis Stachelek and Will Woodall tying for gold in the 50-freestyle, Jake Baker finishing first in the 500-yard freestyle, and Jackson Kehler taking first in the 100-yard butterfly. Stachelek also secured another gold in the 100-yard freestyle and set a new program record.
Other notable performances included Abby Pope’s strong showing in the 500-yard freestyle, Lauren Greenwell’s silver in the 200-yard breaststroke, and solid finishes from Layton Sealman, Kellen Cameron, Nate Decker, and Landon Nava.
Assistant coach Lewis expressed excitement for the team’s performance as they head into the championship season, jokingly saying, “Roses are red, violets are blue, we’re going to swim fast, with or without you.” The team has one more session in Las Vegas and the divers will compete against UCLA to qualify for NCAA Zones on February 15.
