Lighthouse Guild Awarded $100,000 Grant for Technology to Assist Visually Impaired Individuals

Lighthouse Guild has received a $100,000 grant from the Frances G. Scaife Foundation to expand its programs teaching vital technological skills to visually impaired individuals. The grant, announced on February 5, will allow for the launch of the Frannie Scaife Tech Training Initiative, aimed at providing one-on-one and group training sessions. The donation, alongside support from other organizations, will help further the organization’s mission of promoting independence, work, and education for visually impaired individuals through technological accessibility. One program, Tech Pals, features young people teaching older visually impaired individuals how to use modern smartphone technology. Additionally, programs like Tech-In sessions and volunteer tax preparation services will also benefit from the grant. Lighthouse Guild also plans to participate in the TD Five Boro Bike Tour with a team of “sighted and unsighted” bikers riding tandem. The organization hopes to not only improve the quality of life for its clients through these programs, but also to share its knowledge and expertise with others. Chief Marketing Officer Jaine Schmidt emphasized the importance of collaboration and teamwork in reaching more individuals in need of training and accessibility services, both in New York City and nationwide. The ultimate goal is to provide support and assistance to visually impaired individuals across the country through innovative programs and partnerships.
