Nearly 80 students from the BYU Political Affairs Society recently visited the Utah State Capitol, a significant increase from previous years. The trip aimed to educate students about state government and encourage political engagement. President Kendra Pinegar emphasized the importance of political education in today’s society where political news is prevalent.
During the visit, students had the opportunity to explore key rooms where important legislative debates take place, including the House of Representatives, Senate, and Supreme Court. Utah State Auditor Tina Cannon stressed the importance of citizen involvement in government and encouraged students to participate and understand how government functions.
The trip also allowed students to connect with influential political leaders such as U.S. Representative Celeste Maloy and newly-elected U.S. Attorney General Derek Brown. Historian Dallin Bundy emphasized the importance of visiting the state capitol and being aware of one’s government, suggesting that more people should take the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the workings of the government.
The event was seen as a valuable educational experience for the students, providing them with firsthand knowledge of the political process and the opportunity to interact with political leaders. The increased interest and participation in the trip indicate a growing desire among college students to be more politically informed and engaged in the democratic process.
