Despite putting up eight runs, the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers softball team fell short against the Utah Utes, losing 9-8 on Sunday. Junior Presley Hosick took the loss in the circle for Minnesota.
Offensively, the Gophers were led by senior Margaret Tobias, who went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Junior Syndey Schwartz also had a standout performance, hitting a home run and driving in two runs. Senior Nani Valencia contributed with two hits, a double, a walk, and an RBI.
The game saw the Gophers take the lead multiple times, only to surrender it to the Utes each time. Despite a late rally in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 9-8, Minnesota was unable to complete the comeback.
The next game for the Golden Gophers will be at the Joan Joyce Classic in Boca Raton, Fla. starting on Thursday. The tournament will feature matchups against Florida Atlantic University, Louisville, Villanova, and NC State.
