Proposed Legislation Would Introduce Privilege Tax at Point of the Mountain

A proposed bill, SB166, may introduce a privilege tax to the Point of the Mountain development in Utah. The bill aims to modify provisions for the Point of the Mountain State Land Authority and allow for the distribution of a privilege tax to the Authority. Sen. Jerry Stevenson explained the necessity of this tax, stating that since the property is state-owned, there is no property tax, and this tax would help pay for necessary services. The privilege tax would apply to leaseholders on the state land who use the property for profit. Certain exemptions are provided for public use, agricultural permits, public agencies, and charitable organizations. The revenue from these taxes would go towards city services in Draper and Salt Lake County. The bill also proposes the creation of a new board to oversee the authority and its budget. The Senate Economic Development and Workforce Services Committee unanimously recommended the bill for approval. This tax could bring additional revenue to support development and services in the area.
