President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that he would immediately cut off former President Joe Biden’s access to intelligence information by revoking Biden’s security clearances and stopping his daily intelligence briefings. While presidents do not have security clearances, they have traditionally been allowed to receive intelligence briefings if consulted about events during their administration. Biden’s office did not immediately respond to the announcement.
In response to Trump’s actions, Biden had previously stated that there was no need for Trump to receive intelligence briefings due to his erratic behavior unrelated to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack. Trump was charged in June 2023 for mishandling classified material after leaving office, but the case was dismissed by a Florida judge nominated by Trump. The Justice Department moved to appeal the decision during the Biden administration, but Trump’s administration dropped the appeal days into his second term.
Trump cited a report from former special counsel Robert Hur, who noted Biden’s poor memory in his decision not to prosecute him for handling classified documents. Last month, Trump also moved to revoke security clearances for 50 former intelligence officials, a move that legal experts found unprecedented. These actions raise questions about the precedent set by Biden’s comments on denying Trump intelligence briefings and the handling of classified information by both former presidents.
