After four years of service in Governor Cox’s cabinet, Utah Department of Agriculture & Food Commissioner Craig Buttars has announced his retirement at the end of the 2025 Utah State Legislature. A statement from Buttars expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in this role and his increased love for agriculture and Utah’s farmers and ranchers. During his tenure, Buttars advocated for more water-wise practices in agriculture, oversaw the expansion of a medical cannabis program, and implemented a new state-run program focusing on local food processing.
Buttars’ retirement announcement coincided with the departure of another member of Governor Cox’s cabinet, Utah Department of Environmental Quality Executive Director Kim Shelley. Shelley announced her resignation at the end of the month, adding to the changes within the state’s government leadership. As Buttars prepares to step down from his position, the Utah Department of Agriculture & Food will be tasked with finding a successor to continue the work that Buttars has initiated during his time as commissioner.
