Search underway for missing plane carrying 10 passengers in Alaska

A search is underway in Alaska for a plane with 10 people on board that never arrived in Nome as scheduled. The Bering Air Caravan flight from Unalakleet to Nome was reported overdue to Alaska State Troopers at 4 p.m. local time. There were nine passengers and a pilot on board. The Coast Guard has been notified and there is an active ground search underway, with weather conditions impacting air operations. A C-130 Coast Guard plane will conduct a grid search and Elmendorf Air Force Base is providing flight support. Ground crews have covered the coast from Nome to Topkok, but the exact location of the plane is still unknown. Bering Air reported the flight took off from Unalakleet at 2:37 p.m. The Coast Guard stated that the plane was 12 miles offshore when its position was lost on the route from Unalakleet to Nome. Unalakleet is a small coastal community on the western coast of Alaska, and Nome is about 141 miles to the northwest. Search efforts are being expanded until the plane is located.
