Newly Released Research by UWLP Reveals Current State of Women in Utah Politics

WalletHub recently ranked Utah as the fourth best state to live in based on 51 key indicators, but the state lags far behind most states in gender equity in elected positions, as per the Utah State University Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP). The research assessed women’s representation in various political roles in the state, revealing areas of progress and areas needing improvement.

According to the research, women hold 16.7% of Utah’s congressional seats, lower than the national average of 28.4%. However, two of five statewide executive offices in Utah are held by women, surpassing the national average. In the state legislature, only 29.8% of legislators are women, ranking Utah 34th in the nation.

In terms of mayors, 22.9% of Utah mayors are women, and 31% of city council members in municipalities are female. While representation on boards of education is aligned with the national average, there is still room for improvement in increasing the number of women in political leadership roles.

UWLP’s director, Susan Madsen, emphasized the importance of including women’s perspectives and leadership in government at all levels to benefit all Utahns. The full report can be accessed on the UWLP website.
