A bill in Utah that would require landlords to give tenants two months notice before raising rent has been stopped for the third year in a row. The motion to recommend HB182 failed in the House Business, Labor, and Commerce Committee. The bill was opposed by the Utah Rental Housing Association, who felt it wouldn’t pass in its current form. Current Utah law only prohibits landlords from raising rent during the term of a lease. The bill sponsor, Rep. Gay Lynn Bennion, wanted renters to have tools to help them thrive and felt HB182 benefited both renters and landlords. Anyone interested in similar legislation should contact their representatives to negotiate a win-win solution. The Utah Rental Housing Association is hoping to make a deal next year.
