The Met Gala’s theme this year is “Tailored for You,” in conjunction with an exhibit focusing on Black style in menswear over the centuries. The event will showcase a new host committee of high-profile celebrities, including athletes, filmmakers, actors, musicians, authors, artists, playwrights, and fashion figures. The gala, a fundraiser for the Costume Institute, will feature a menu created by celebrity chef Kwame Onwuachi and launch the spring exhibit “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” inspired by Monica L. Miller’s book, “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.” The exhibit will run for six months and present a cultural and historical examination of Black style from the 18th century to today through the lens of dandyism. It will explore how Black people have used fashion and dress to transform their identities over the centuries. The show will include contributions from artists such as Torkwase Dyson and Iké Udé, and will be divided into 12 sections representing different characteristics of “dandy” style. The Met Gala is set to take place on May 5, with the exhibit opening to the public on May 10 and running until October 26.
