Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall provided an update on the city’s efforts to crack down on illegal camping, drug, and gun offenses outlined in a public safety plan. In the three weeks since enforcement efforts began, Salt Lake City Police have arrested 460 individuals, issued 89 citations for illegal camping, and seized 42 guns. Mendenhall emphasized the importance of improving public safety in high-need areas and highlighted the collaboration between officers and social workers to enhance safety.
The enforcement efforts include targeting fentanyl traffickers and violent offenders, resulting in the seizure of various drugs and the arrest of individuals in possession of firearms. The police department is focusing resources on local crime hotspots while also providing outreach to those experiencing homelessness or mental health issues. The city is working on building a dashboard to track the impacts of the plan and ensure accountability. The efforts come in response to a call from Utah’s top Republican leaders to address public safety concerns.
