Pro-Russia Ukrainian paramilitary leader killed in bomb attack in Moscow

A bomb exploded in the lobby of a luxury apartment block in Moscow, targeting pro-Russian paramilitary leader Armen Sarkisyan from eastern Ukraine. The blast killed at least one person and injured four others, with Sarkisyan eventually dying from his injuries in the hospital. The explosion occurred as Sarkisyan entered the “Scarlet Sails” complex on the banks of the Moskva River, just 12 km from the Kremlin. Russian media reported the incident as an assassination attempt orchestrated against Sarkisyan, who was accused by Ukraine of supporting Russia’s war effort in the Donetsk region.

An investigation is underway to identify those responsible for planning and ordering the attack. Video footage shows extensive damage to the building’s lobby, with Sarkisyan reportedly sustaining serious injuries in the blast. In December, Ukraine’s SBU security service labeled Sarkisyan as a “crime boss” in Donetsk, suspected of aiding illegal armed groups and organizing supplies for frontline units.

This incident follows the killing of Russian General Igor Kirillov in a bomb blast in Moscow in December, for which Ukraine claimed responsibility. The motive behind the attack on Sarkisyan remains unclear, and there has been no comment from Ukraine regarding the recent explosion. Sarkisyan’s death and the targeted bombing have heightened tensions between Russia and Ukraine, sparking concerns about escalating violence and unrest in the region.
