Utah lawmakers erode democracy, says Tribune editorial

The Utah Legislature is currently focused on accumulating more power for themselves and limiting the power of others, particularly those in marginalized communities. Lawmakers are rushing to pass legislation targeting the LGBTQ community, specifically transgender individuals. The House approved HB269, which bans transgender women from being assigned to rooms with other women at universities, despite existing processes for roommate reassignment. Additionally, a bill, SB73, is moving quickly through the process that would require citizen initiative groups to spend a large amount of money on publishing their proposals in newspapers.

Lawmakers are also retaliating against those who challenge their authority, such as the Utah Education Association, by passing HB267, which would limit public employee unions’ collective bargaining rights. The Legislature’s actions reflect their discomfort with being questioned or challenged in any way. It is important for these power grabs to be challenged and scrutinized to prevent further erosion of rights and protections for all residents of Utah.
