Utah Seeks Co-Management of ‘Mighty 5′ National Parks with Federal Government

Utah State Representative Steve Eliason intends to introduce a resolution in the state legislature to allow Utah to co-manage the “Mighty Five” national parks. The bill would establish an agreement between the state and the U.S. Department of Interior to help address over $400 million in deferred maintenance and staffing shortages in the parks. The state would be allowed to retain some of the revenue generated by the parks in exchange for their assistance. However, Rep. Eliason reassured that the parks would not be opened up for development and that the federal government would maintain ownership of the land. The resolution aims to focus on improving infrastructure such as bridges, trails, campgrounds, and water systems that are in need of repair. This initiative comes as a response to the lack of sufficient funding from the federal government for the national parks.
