Fourth American Prisoner-Hostage Exchange

Israeli American hostage Keith Siegel was transferred to the Red Cross in the Port of Gaza before being released back to Israel. The Red Cross vehicles arrived at the port where Hamas handed over Siegel. Siegel walked onto stage with a Hamas fighter, was cheered by the crowd, and then led to the Red Cross vehicle. The Red Cross signed a document with Hamas before the release, and other hostages, Ofer Kalderon and Yarden Bibas, were already handed over.

Siegel’s wife and son, Aviva and Shay, were on their way to reunite with him. In total, 183 Palestinian prisoners were expected to be released in exchange for the three hostages. 30 prisoners were to be released for each hostage. The hostages were being released in a choreographed and orderly manner, contrasting with past chaotic handovers.

Bibas’ family is still hoping for the release of his wife and two young sons who were taken hostage along with him. The fate of his family members remained unclear, as Hamas claimed they were killed in an airstrike, but the family held onto hope.

Siegel was one of three hostages being released, along with Kalderon and Bibas. The exchange was part of the fourth hostage-prisoner exchange between Hamas and Israel. Siegel, originally from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was taken in the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas.
