DVIDS – News – Datlof Plans for Future of Military Medical Technology Transfer Following DOD Award

Barry Datlof, chief of business development and commercialization at the Office of Medical Technology Transfer (MTT) in Fort Detrick, Maryland, recently received the 2024 Department of Defense George F. Linsteadt Technology Transfer Achievement Award for his contributions to the development and implementation of the Assistive Technology Transfer (AT2) program. The AT2 program has been successful in maturing and de-risking first-generation biomedical technologies, resulting in the commercialization of over 30 biomedical technologies and generating over $26 million in royalty income. Datlof accepted the award on behalf of the MTT team at an award ceremony on Jan. 30, where they were also recognized by the Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology with a 2024 Technology Transfer Innovation Award.

The MTT team’s AT2 program has helped to connect inventors with expert assistance at each stage of development, access funding sources, navigate regulatory and licensing requirements, and ultimately bring new technologies to market for both military and civilian applications. Datlof’s diverse background in technology transfer has helped shape the success of the program, and he envisions further growth and innovation in the future, including the establishment of a DOD-wide “angel fund” to support smaller tech transfer offices and the development of an online storefront for technology transfer.

As the MRDC’s Office of Medical Technology Transfer looks forward to its next 25 years, Datlof and his team are committed to continuing their work to save lives through innovative medical technologies. Their dedication to excellence and collaboration has positioned them as leaders in the field of technology transfer within the Department of Defense.
