Defense agency prohibits Black History Month and other ‘special observances’

The Defense Intelligence Agency has ordered a pause on activities and events related to special observances such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Black History Month, Juneteenth, LGBTQ Pride Month, Holocaust Remembrance Day, and others to comply with President Donald Trump’s executive order. This directive extends to affinity groups and employee networking groups within the agency. The Trump administration has targeted programs promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the federal government, with the Justice Department and other agencies also dismantling DEI programs and employee resource groups. The decision has been met with criticism, with former officials expressing concern over the impact on communities that have finally gained recognition and a seat at the table. They argue that observances are essential for acknowledging American history and raising awareness of community needs to improve federal support. The rollback of these programs is seen as demoralizing and could negatively affect productivity and morale in the workplace. Former government employees involved in DEI work express disappointment over the dismantling of programs aimed at providing resources and support to underserved communities. The move to curtail observances and ERGs comes as Trump inaugurated his presidency on MLK Day and pledged to work towards realizing Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of equality and unity.
