Utah mother of three and children’s book author, Kouri Richins, will stand trial for the alleged poisoning of her husband after publishing a book on grief following his death. Judge Richard Mrazik ruled that there was enough evidence to move forward with a jury trial. Prosecutors claim that Kouri Richins fatally poisoned her husband with a lethal dose of fentanyl in March 2022, slipping the drug into a cocktail he drank. Kouri Richins has maintained her innocence and pleaded not guilty to all 11 charges against her.
During the preliminary hearing, an additional attempted murder charge was filed, accusing Kouri Richins of attempting to poison her husband on Valentine’s Day by slipping fentanyl into his favorite sandwich, causing a severe but nonfatal reaction. Summit County Prosecutor Brad Bloodworth defended the charge by stating that he believed Kouri Richins learned from the first attempt and used that knowledge to carry out the fatal poisoning 17 days later. The case has sparked widespread interest in the small mountain town near Park City where the couple lived. The trial will likely be closely followed as more details emerge about the tragic events that led to Eric Richins’ death and the allegations against his widow.
