Gabbard is challenged on Snowden and surveillance program at tough questions session

Tulsi Gabbard, President Donald Trump’s pick for director of national intelligence, faced tough questions from Republican senators during her confirmation hearing. Gabbard shifted her views on whistleblower Edward Snowden, no longer supporting a pardon for him. She also changed her stance on electronic surveillance, now supporting the program that Snowden exposed. Gabbard needs the support of every Republican on the committee for her confirmation, as Democrats are expected to oppose her nomination.

Gabbard’s past comments blaming NATO for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and her support for Syria’s Assad regime were criticized. She defended herself, stating that she is not a puppet for any foreign leaders and questioned Washington’s national security establishment. Gabbard’s past opposition to electronic surveillance without a warrant aligns her with progressive Democrats but puts her at odds with the Senate Intelligence Committee, which is dominated by national security hawks.

If confirmed, Gabbard would oversee 18 spy agencies with a budget of more than $100 billion. Despite her controversial past actions and statements, Gabbard’s loyalty to the United States was defended by Sen. Tom Cotton, who pointed to her clean background checks and active security clearance. Gabbard agreed that the Office of the Director of Intelligence needs reforming, indicating she is willing to take on the challenge of overseeing the country’s intelligence operations.
